Who Did It Best? Free AI Image Generators Put to the Test

AI image generators are everywhere now — free, fast, and promising to turn any idea into art. But not all free tools are created equal. So I decided to run a little experiment: give ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Bing, and DeepAI the exact same three prompts and see who truly delivers.

The prompts were intentionally varied to test style, complexity, and creativity:

  1. Comic pop‑art protest scene Protestors rallying against billionaire elites in front of an old ghost town.

  2. Kawaii girl in poppy fields Inspired by the Wizard of Oz aesthetic.

  3. Post‑apocalyptic pastel future‑punk woman Gas mask, cute pink dress, white combat boots, and a flamethrower‑style weapon.                                                                                                                                                          Some tools surprised me. Some disappointed me. And one… well, one absolutely flopped. So, Let’s break it down.

  •

1st Place: ChatGPT — The Clear Winner

ChatGPT produced the strongest images across all three prompts.

The comic pop‑art protest scene had energy, clarity, and style accuracy. The kawaii poppy‑field girl looked adorable and polished, and the pastel post‑apocalyptic woman was shockingly on‑point, balancing cute and dystopian perfectly.

ChatGPT’s strengths:

  • Excellent prompt adherence

  • Strong stylistic interpretation

  • Clean, high‑quality visuals

  • Consistent results across all prompts

If you want the best free AI image generation right now, ChatGPT is the one doing it best.

  •

2nd Place: Grok — Great Quality, But Not Free

Grok came in second only because it doesn’t offer free generations like the others. Quality‑wise, it was impressive — especially on the protest scene and the pastel future‑punk prompt. Grok’s images leaned more “artistic” than “literal,” but in a good way.

If Grok ever opens up free generations, it could easily compete for the top spot.

  •

Middle of the Pack: Gemini — Solid, But Not Spectacular

Gemini delivered good graphics and generally followed the prompts well. It didn’t blow me away, but it didn’t disappoint either. I was excited to see Gemini use Nano Banana, their quirky image model. But the results… didn’t live up to the hype.

Highlights:

  • Clean rendering

  • Good color handling

  • Decent accuracy except the words on the protestor's signs.

Weaknesses:

  • Sometimes too “safe” or generic

  • Less personality in the images

Gemini sits comfortably in the middle — reliable, but not remarkable.

Second to Last: Bing

Across all three prompts, Bing struggled with:

  • Style accuracy
  • Character consistency
  • Scene composition was better for the words being correct but generic in two of them.
  • The pastel future‑punk prompt was the best but I had to prompt it twice to get a decent image. The kawaii poppy‑field girl was the closest to correct but still lacked the charm and polish I expected. The protest scene was noticeably off‑target.

  • Last Place: DeepAI — The Worst Results by Far

DeepAI came in dead last. The images were:

    • Low quality

    • Poorly rendered

    • Barely aligned with the prompts

    • Lacking detail, style, and coherence

It simply couldn’t keep up with the others. If you’re looking for free AI art, DeepAI is not the place to go.

Conclusion: Who Did It Best?

ChatGPT wins — hands down. It delivered the most accurate, stylish, and visually appealing images across all three prompts. Grok showed promise but isn’t free. Gemini held its own. Bing needs refinement. And DeepAI… well, it needs a full overhaul.

If you’re experimenting with AI art, especially with creative or stylistic prompts, ChatGPT is currently the strongest free option.
